History
Farmers began tilling land in what would become Roanoke in 1740, and the city was officially established in 1884. The advent of the railroad just prior to this date greatly influenced the city and it grew by record numbers into a major transportation hub. Since that time, the city has established itself as the center of commercial trade and cultural authority in the surrounding region.
